Description
Superb authentic jaw of Mosasaurus on plaster matrix of 73 cm and 11 kg discovered in Khouribga in Morocco of 70 million years!!The
Mosasauridae
are an extinct family of giant marine reptiles related to lizards and snakes (but in no way to dinosaurs, plesiosaurs or ichthyosaurs) and grouping different genera such as the Mosasaur
. The family takes its name from the first described species, the
mosasaur
(literally “Meuse lizard”, so named because of its discovery in 1780 near Maastricht, a city crossed by the Meuse).
With a length of between 3.5 and 18 meters, the Mosasauridae could have up to 150 vertebrae. Like modern whales and dolphins, mosasaurs were animals of land origin readapted to marine life.
Mosasaurs have long been seen as close relatives of modern varanids, therefore as belonging to the Sauria subgroup within the squamates (the latter grouping together lizards, geckos and snakes). But some authors lean more towards a connection with snakes, at a very old stage, since legs are always present in the Mosasauridae.
