Description
This fossil layer chipping shows mulitple fish fossils. 1 fish is almost a full fish, front half of 2 others. U can see really good details including the fins and vertebrae and even the fish skin color and markings. This one is a chip piece that came from me breaking a bigger piece. the back does show several fish bodies as well, so I consider this one a 2 for 1.Weight: 5.3 ounces
Size: 5.0" long by 4.5" by 0.40" thick
U will also get an information card with this fossil and a certificate of authenticity.
VERY RARE ~ Of the Some 19 genera of Eocene fish come from the Green River formation, this is the rarest and hardest one to find.
While walking my dog, Sydney in the desert between green river and rock springs, Wyoming, we ran into an area where a fossil fish layer was exposed. Collected a bunch of nice specimens, so make sure ya check out my store.
This is a mass mortality fossil fish of the family Clupeidae genus Gosiutichthys from the Green River Formation. Its name, Gosiutichthys, comes from Gosiute, a Middle Eocene lake where it lived in large schools. It comes from a formation that outcrops near the Fontenelle Reservoir and near the Farson Dam. The shales and fossils are not from the typical Green River fish fauna. They have a different type of preservation. The preservation is excellent. Members of Family Clupeidae are the herrings, shads, sardines, and menhadens. Extant species are some of the most important food fishes in the world.
