‘Eightball’ is a Black member of the ‘Lusthog Squad’ who combat correspondent ‘Joker’ joins to get a close up view of the fighting in Hue during the TET Offensive of 1968.
As the squad moves into the city ‘Eightball’ is sent ahead to ‘scout-out’ an area and gets ambushed by a lone female Viet Cong sniper.
The squad medic rushes forward to help the wounded ‘Eightball’ and is also shot by the sniper... who then puts a second bullet into the Black Marine.
At this point, the squad leader, ‘Cowboy’ hesitates to risk anymore casualties and wants to withdraw when ‘Animal Mother’ leaps to his feet and charges forward firing his M60 'Pig' Machine Gun from the hip in a bid to rescue ‘Eightball’. The rest of the squad follow him.
‘Animal Mother’s’ brave... but foolhardy assault on the enemy sniper does allow the rest of the squad to advance to a better forward position.
VN120 King & Country’s ‘Eightball’ struggles to get off the ground after being shot by the V.C. sniper, his M16 in front of him.

    7
    fighting Marines in dramatic, dynamic action poses;
many more are on the way including a magnificent looking M274
‘Mule’ a half-ton 4 x 4 Utility Platform Truck that was used to carry ammunition and supplies forward and bring wounded troops out safely... and recently released the opposing enemy troops from the NVA & Vietcong forces.
All of these NEW 2018-2021 Vietnam War ‘
    Leathernecks

    NEW for 2021
    are additional figures from the
    1987
major motion picture release of the Vietnam War classic by Stanley Kubrick...
    "
    Full Metal Jacket
    "
... the viscerally hauntingly violent movie of the training and ultimate combat of a group of U.S. Marines who battle their way through the war-torn city of
    Huế
during the Tet Offensive in 1968.
An amazing fact about the movie is that Kubrick ‘
    shot
    ’ the entire movie (
    at least the battle scenes
) in a disused, former gas works on the outskirts of London!
There, he created part of the US Marine base at
    Da Nang
    … a street scene in
the city of Da Nang... and of
course, the battle-scarred buildings and urban wreckage of
    Hue
, the former imperial capital city.
Kubrick also created a unique group of characters to tell their stories in the movie… ‘
    Joker
    ’… ‘
    Gomer Pyle
    ’… ‘
    Cowboy
    ’… ‘
    Rafterman

    Gunnery Sergeant Hartman

"In war there is no second prize for the runner-up."
    General Omar N. Bradley
    HISTORICAL NOTE
    :
'TET' OFFENSIVE and THE BATTLE OF HUE... 1968
    Huế
    - the ancient imperial capital city of Vietnam - was a hundred kilometers south of the DMZ. It had a population of nearly 140,000, making it the third largest city in the Republic of South Vietnam. The Citadel, or Imperial City, is the walled in portion of Huế sitting on the north bank of the Perfume River.
The Battle of Huế - also called the Siege of Huế - was one of the bloodiest and longest battles of the Vietnam War. Between 30 January and 3 March, 1968, in the South Vietnamese city of Huế, 11 battalions of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN), four U.S. Army battalions, and three U.S. Marine Corps battalions - totaling 18 battalions – engaged and defeated 10 battalions of the People’s Army of Vietnam (PAVN) and the Vietcong (VC).
By the beginning of the North Vietnamese 'Tet' Offensive on 30 January 1968, large, conventional, U.S. forces had already been committed to combat operations on Vietnamese soil for almost three years.
    In 1968, the city of
    Huế
, was an important supply and logistics center for
    U.S.,
ARVN (Army of the Republic of South Vietnam) and other Allied Forces from the coastal city of Da Nangto the Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).  Huế was also a base for United States Navy supply boats.
The city was also one of the primary targets of the joint NVA/VC offensive,
which coincided with the Vietnamese Lunar New Year.
Within hours of launching the attack on
    Huế
the Vietcong and the PAVN launched the Tet Offensive, by simultaneously attacking hundreds of military targets and population centers across the country… including Huế. T
he PAVN and Vietcong forces rapidly occupied most of the city... only two small military compounds remained unoccupied.
    Over the next month,
    during intense house-to-house fighting,
the U.S. Marines and ARVN forces gradually drove the enemy out of
    Huế.
In the end, although the Allies declared a military victory, the city of Huế was virtually destroyed and more than 5,000 civilians were killed (2,800 of them executed by the PAVN and Vietcong, according to the South Vietnamese government). The communist forces lost an estimated 2,400 to 8,000 killed, while Allied forces lost 668 dead and 3,707 wounded. The losses negatively affected the American public's perception of the war, and political support for the war began to wane.

    "
    FULL METAL JACKET" (1987)
    Full Metal Jacket
is a 1987 war film directed, co-written, and produced by Stanley Kubrick and starring Mathew Modine, R. Lee Ermey, Vincent D’Onofrio and Adam Baldwin. The screenplay by Kubrick, Michael Herr and Gustav Hasford was based on Hasford’s 1979 novel
    The Short-Timers
    .
The storyline follows a platoon of U.S. Marines through their boot camp training in Marine Corps Recruit Depot Paris Island, South Carolina. The movie primarily focuses on two privates, Joker and 'Gomer' Pyle, who struggle under their abusive drill instructor, Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, and the experiences of two of the Marines in the platoon while ‘in country’ in the Vietnamese cities of Da Nang and Hue during the 1968 Tet Offensive in the Vietnam War. The film's title refers to the full metal jacket bullet used by military servicemen during combat operations.
The film was released in the United States on June 26, 1987. "Full Metal Jacket" received critical acclaim, grossed .4 million in front of a budget of million and an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for Kubrick, Herr, and Hasford.
In 2001, the American Film Institute placed it at No. 95 in their “AFI’s 100 Years… 100 Thrills” poll.
    HISTORICAL REFLECTION
    :
THE VIETNAM WAR (EXCERPTED FROM KEN BURNS "THE VIETNAM WAR"
    )
America’s involvement in Vietnam began in secrecy. It ended, 30 years later in failure, witnessed by the entire world. It was begun in good faith by decent people out of fateful misunderstandings, American overconfidence, and Cold War miscalculation. And it was prolonged because it seemed easier to muddle through than admit that it had been caused by tragic decisions, made by five American presidents, belonging to both political parties. Before the war was over, more than 58,000 Americans would be dead.
At least 250,000 South Vietnamese troops died in the conflict, as well.
So did over one million North Vietnamese soldiers and Vietcong guerrillas. Two million civilians, north and south, are thought to have perished, as well as tens of thousands more in the neighboring states of Laos and Cambodia. For many Vietnamese, it was a brutal civil war, for others, the bloody climatic chapter in a century-old struggle for independence.
For those Americans who fought in it, and for those who fought against it back home, as well as those who merely glimpsed it on the nightly news, the Vietnam War was a decade of agony, the most divisive period since the American Civil War. Vietnam seemed to call everything into question, the value of honor and gallantry, the qualities of cruelty and mercy, the candor of the American government, and what it means to be a patriot. And those who lived through it have never been able to erase its memory, have never stopped arguing about what really happened, why everything went so badly wrong, who was to blame, and whether it was all worth it.

Note: Although we have never been to either South or North Vietnam, nor any of the battle sites of the Vietnam War, we have visited the stunning U.S.M.C. National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, VA which is near the Marine Corps base in Quantico, VA and of course the stunning Vietnam Wall in Washington D.C. In addition, we have also toured All Five of the Landing Beaches along the Cotentin P
    eninsula
and many of the historical locations, and museums in an around Normandy, we have also visited the Bastogne area, including the Baugnez '44 Museum, the site of the Malmedy Massacre, the still existing foxholes of the 502nd and 506th P.I.R. and the pastoral surrounding area in Belgium on several occasions. We have found both the French and the Belgian people, especially in the towns in Normandy and area near Bastogne, to be very friendly and still grateful to the Allies, especially the American forces, for their liberation… despite the huge loss of life and property to the French and Belgian civilians. In addition, should you want to visit the area in and around Normandy or Bastogne, we would be willing to share our experiences or trip itinerary with you, which may help to make your travel through the area easier and perhaps make the historical experience more valuable.
