Dressed in the long sky blue wool greatcoats used by Union soldiers during the winter months of the Civil War, these three members of the 28th Irish Brigade march with their Springfield rifles toward Confederate troops, who are occupying a sunken farm lane in front of the Irish Brigade troops that is just below Marye's Heights... during the brutal fighting in the Battle of Fredericksburg in December 1862.

IRISH BRIGADE
The Irish Brigade, during the Civil War, was an infantry brigade, consisting predominantly of Irish Americans, that served in the Union Army in the American Civil War. The designation of the first regiment in the brigade, the 69th New York Infantry, or the "Fighting 69th", continued in later wars. The 28th Regiment of the Irish Brigade achieved a badge of honor for its actions during the battle of Antietam, Sharpsburg and for being the only Irish Brigade unit to fight in the winter battle at Fredericksburg, VA in December 1862.

BATTLE OF FREDERICKSBURG, VA - DECEMBER 11 - 15, 1862
With nearly 200,000 combatants - the greatest number of any American Civil War engagement - Fredericksburg was one of the largest and deadliest battles of the Civil War. It featured the first opposed river crossing in American military history, as well as the Civil War's first instance of urbane combat. The Battle of Fredericksburg, fought during the winter, in December 1862, ended as a victory for Robert E. Lee and Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. The Union Army of the Potomac, under the command of Ambrose Burnside (who had previously replaced George McClellan as commander of the Army of the Potomac) suffered more than 12,500 casualties, while Lee's Confederate Army of Northern Virginia counted approximately 6,000 losses. The Federals, under the command of Burnside retreated, losing an opportunity to advance further into Confederate territory and capture the capital city of Richmond.
After failing to pursue Gen. Robert E. Lee's army aggressively after the Battle of Antietam, Maj. General George B. McClellan was removed from command of the Army of the Potomac, by president Abraham Lincoln. His replacement, Maj. General Ambrose E. Burnside, feeling pressure from Washington to move quickly, developed a plan to defeat Lee and ultimately capture the Confederate capital city of Richmond.
From his camps around Warrenton, Virginia, Burnside planned to abandon the army's movement southwest in favor of a quick dash southeast toward the lower Rappahannock River. There, he would cross quickly and position himself between Lee and the direct route to Richmond. The plan had great promise, but to accomplish it successfully, speed was essential.
The Union main assault against Jackson, whose troops served as a defense of Longstreet's flank, produced initial success. In an area later known as the 'Slaughter Pen', Maj. Gen. George G. Meade's division was able to briefly pierce Jackson's line and threatened the Confederate right flank. However, lack of coordinated reinforcements and Jackson's powerful counterattack stymied the effort and both sides suffered heavy losses with no gain on either side.
As Burnside's "division" moves against Longstreet's veteran Confederate soldiers they suffer horrific casualties. The front of Longstreet's position is a sunken farm lane at the foot of Marye's Height, full of Confederate troops three ranks deep. As wave after wave of Federal soldiers advance oven open ground to take the sunken road, they are met with devastating rifle and artillery fire from the nearly impregnable Confederate position. Confederate artillerist Edward Porter Alexander claims that even "a chicken could not live on that field" proves to be prophetic. As Robert E. Lee, appalled by the carnage, surveyed the battlefield he remarked "It is well that war is so terrible. We should grow too fond of it".
